The 2025 electoral campaign for legislative positions in Buenos Aires was marked by the circulation of deepfakes of former President Mauricio Macri, in a video falsely depicting him withdrawing the candidacy of Silvia Lospennato, his party’s (PRO) candidate, and urging voters to support Manuel Adorni, the candidate from the current president Javier Milei’s party, La Libertad Avanza. Although produced by Artificial Intelligence (AI), the video exhibited remarkable realism, making it extremely difficult to distinguish between real content and digital manipulation. The strategy aimed to confuse voters just hours before the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the early hours of election day, the Electoral Court of Buenos Aires issued a Resolution ordering the X platform to remove the content within 2 hours. Despite the authority\u2019s swift action, the consequences had already materialized,, with approximately 14 million people having viewed the video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Court also informed the Public Prosecutor’s Office but did not impose penalties on the users who posted or shared the deepfake video,. The incident reignited the debate about the need to regulate the use of deepfakes and their harmful potential, especially in political contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
