On March 6, 2026, Indonesia\u2019s Minister of Communications, Meutya Hafid, announced that the government will restrict access by children and adolescents under the age of 16 to digital platforms. The measure will take effect on March 28, and accounts of users under 16 on platforms classified as \u201chigh risk\u201d will be gradually deactivated from that date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adolescents aged 13 and older will still be allowed to use \u201clower risk\u201d platforms, provided they have parental consent. The Minister noted that children are exposed to risks such as pornography, cyberbullying, online fraud, and digital addiction, and stated that Indonesia will be the first country outside the Western sphere to implement this type of restriction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The measure follows the path set by Australia, which in 2025 passed legislation banning social media access for users under 16, and is part of a broader global trend toward stricter rules for protecting children and adolescents in the digital environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
