Brazil discusses privacy and digital security in international meeting

Brasília hosted important events on data protection and digital privacy from April 1-3, 2025, bringing together Brazilian and foreign experts. The first two days featured the II Meeting of Working Groups of the Ibero-American Data Protection Network (RIPD), followed by the I International Data Protection Meeting of the Brazilian National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) at the Palace of Justice.

The Secretary of Digital Law, Lílian Cintra de Melo, emphasized the importance of collaboration between countries with similar cultures to address common data protection challenges. “The challenges we face are very similar, and the emerging trends and future of data protection bring us closer together,” she stated.

The event continued discussions initiated in 2024 in Lima, Peru, aimed at establishing a permanent coordination forum between data protection authorities of the network’s member countries. Nathalie Fragoso e Silva Ferro, Program Director at Sedigi, stressed that “in an environment where cross-border information flow drives the economy, innovation, and social relations, adequate regulation is necessary to ensure citizens’ security and fundamental rights.”

For Waldemar Gonçalves, ANPD President, the meeting reaffirmed Brazil’s leadership in the global data protection landscape and demonstrated the growing relevance of international cooperation in this area. Representatives from data protection authorities from Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Spain, Mexico, Panama, Portugal participated, along with delegates from Germany, Kenya, and the Asia-Pacific Privacy Authorities Forum.

The RIPD, established in 2003, serves as an integrating forum between public and private actors to promote the exchange of information and experiences, as well as to advance regulatory developments that ensure advanced protection of personal data rights in a democratic context.
